William Verdult Captures the spirit and soul of Geisha

Long before Columbia Pictures decided to make the film “Memories of a Geisha,” William Verdult the “Dutch Master” one of a very few American master artists alive today captured the spirit and soul in his beautiful painting called the Geisha. The word Geishas means "person of the arts." Geishas are traditional Japanese artists and entertainers. Very common in the 18th and 19th centuries, Geishas, though their numbers are dwindling, are still in existence today. Geishas were traditionally trained from young childhood working first as maids, then as assistants to the house's senior geisha. This tradition still exists in Japan, where a student lives at the home of a master, starting out doing general housework and observing and assisting the master, and eventually moving up to become a master in her own right. This training often lasts for many years.

Geisha’s study encompasses a wide variety of arts, including musical instruments, singing, dance, tea ceremony, flower arranging, poetry and literature. The role of a geisha is that of a sexy performer. By watching and assisting the senior geisha, students become skilled in the complex traditions in dealing with clients, in the art of conversation, playing different games, and selecting, matching, and wearing the famous kimono.

William Verdult’s Geisha with its brilliant and vibrant colors was created many years ago. Yet his exquisitely detailed painting was created as if he foresaw the coming of the movie “Memories of a Geisha.” Verdult’s Geisha, elegant and regal matches the artistry of the movie produced by such heavy weights as Lucy Fisher, Douglas Wick and Steven Spielberg.

Frequently people ask about the status of Verdult Lithographs which one is the top selling. In addition, people ask about the different sizes and shapes of the lithographs. Many of Verdult lithographs were produced 10, 15, and even 20 or more years ago. So the quality and condition will certainly differ depending upon the lithograph. Some lithographs were made on thin stock while others were made on very heavy paper stock. Verdult's The Break - Artist Proof

What is an Artist Proof?
According to Wikipedia, an artist's proof is, at least in theory, an impression of a print taken in the printmaking process to see the current printing state of a plate while the plate (or stone, or woodblock...) is being worked on by the artist. A proof may show a clearly incomplete image, often called a working proof or trial impression, but in modern practice is usually used to describe an impression of the finished work that is identical to the numbered copies.[1] There can also be printer's proofs which are taken for the printer to see how the image is printing, or are final impressions the printer is allowed to keep; but normally the term "artist's proof" would cover both cases.

Artist's proofs are not included in the count of a limited edition , and sometimes the number of artist's proofs, which belong to the artist, can be surprisingly high at twenty or more. The artist is not supposed by convention to sell these at once. Buy Now 

At one time the artist's proofs were given to the artist usually as payment for the signing of the edition. The normal number of artist's proofs is 50. In some cases (usually prints purchased for stock from other publishers) it may be higher. The artist's proofs are signed by the artist and numbered showing the quantity of artists proofs available. Because of their restricted number artist's proofs are sold at a higher price. Nowadays, as the artists are paid a signing fee, the publisher keeps a percentage of the artist's proofs for resale.

It is considered, especially in the United States, when the edition is sold out and a secondary market value is realised, an artist's proof will go up in value at a greater percentage rate than the limited edition. Normally the artist's proofs are sold out well before the complete edition and a secondary market value for the artist's proof will begin to increase in value well before the edition is sold out.

History; Proof or State?
The term "proof" is generally, but not consistently, applied only to prints from the late eighteenth-century onwards, beginning with the English mezzotinters, who began the practice of issuing small editions of proofs for collectors, often before the "lettering" or inscription below the image was added.

William Verdult's King Lear - Straight from Shakespeare

One of William Verdult's most revered limited edition lithograph is "King Lear".

Perhaps some do not know that King Lear comes directly from William Shakespeare.

In fact King Lear is widely regarded as Shakespeare's crowning artistic achievement. The scenes in which a mad Lear rages naked on a stormy heath against his deceitful daughters and nature itself are considered by many scholars to be the finest example of tragic lyricism in the English language.

Shakespeare took his main plot line of an aged monarch abused by his children from a folk tale that appeared first in written form in the 12th century and was based on spoken stories that originated much further into the Middle Ages.

In several written versions of "Lear," the king does not go mad, his "good" daughter does not die, and the tale has a happy ending.

This is not the case with Shakespeare's Lear, a tragedy of such consuming force that audiences and readers are left to wonder whether there is any meaning to the physical and moral carnage with which King Lear concludes.

Like the noble Kent, seeing a mad, pathetic Lear with the murdered Cordelia in his arms, the profound brutality of the tale compels us to wonder, "Is this the promised end?" (V.iii.264). That very question stands at the divide between traditional critics of King Lear who find a heroic pattern in the story and modern readers who see no redeeming or purgative dimension to the play at all, the message being the bare futility of the human condition with Lear as Everyman.
